British Values at Shenstone School
At Shenstone School, we are committed to embedding the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs into every aspect of our school life. These values are interwoven within our own school ethos and curriculum, ensuring that our pupils are supported to understand these principles through their experiences, and develop them throughout their educational journey.
Integrating British Values into Our Ethos and Curriculum
Democracy
Our pupils are encouraged to participate in democratic processes, such as participation in our school council, and informing whole school decisions and practices as well as fostering a sense of self advocacy and responsibility.
The Rule of Law
Our school promotes understanding of the importance of rules, whether they govern the class, the school, or the country. This is scaffolded by our behaviour policies, whole school focus on wellbeing and supporting our learners to understand their rights and responsibilities at home, in school and within the wider community.
Individual Liberty
Our pupils are encouraged to make choices within a safe and supportive environment. We provide opportunities for them to express their interests and opinions, promoting self-confidence and self-awareness using their preferred communication style.
Mutual Respect and Tolerance
Respect is a core value at Shenstone School. We celebrate diversity and encourage our pupils to understand and appreciate cultures, faiths, and beliefs different from their own through assemblies, curriculum opportunities, cultural and enrichment events.
Supporting Pupils to Understand and Develop British Values
Our approach includes:
-
Curriculum Integration: British values are embedded across subjects, enabling pupils to explore these concepts in various contexts.
-
Spiritual, Moral, Social, and Cultural Development (SMSC): We provide a range of activities and experiences that promote personal development and understanding of the wider world.
-
Assemblies and Celebrations: Regular assemblies and events focus on themes related to British values, fostering a shared understanding and community spirit.
-
Pupil Voice: We value our pupils' opinions and provide platforms for them to express their views through our Total Communication approach, contributing to school improvement and fostering a sense of belonging.
Through these initiatives, Shenstone School ensures that pupils not only learn about British values but also live them, preparing them to be respectful, responsible, and active members of society.
