PREVENT Strategy
Shenstone School, part of The Kemnal Academies Trust, consistently adheres to the PREVENT strategy by embedding safeguarding, vigilance, and inclusive values into every aspect of school life, ensuring that all members of its community are protected from the risks of radicalisation and harm. A key strength of the school’s approach is its strong safeguarding culture, which reflects and often exceeds national guidance and expectations. The school follows stringent and bespoke policies and has its own robust child protection and safeguarding procedures, demonstrating a clear commitment to PREVENT principles such as early identification and intervention. Safeguarding is described as “everyone’s responsibility,” meaning that all staff are actively involved in maintaining a safe environment and are expected to remain alert to any signs that a student may be vulnerable to extremism or other risks.
In line with PREVENT, Shenstone ensures that all staff are fully trained to recognise indicators of abuse, neglect, or radicalisation and understand exactly how to report concerns. This creates a proactive safeguarding system where issues are identified early and addressed quickly, reducing the likelihood of escalation. Staff confidence and clarity in procedures are essential elements of PREVENT, and Shenstone’s ongoing training and clear reporting structures ensure that no concern is overlooked.
Additionally, the school implements safer recruitment practices, carefully vetting all staff and volunteers before they work with students. This reduces the risk of inappropriate influences entering the school and supports the PREVENT aim of protecting young people from exposure to extremist ideologies. Alongside this, clear safeguarding policies outline how allegations or concerns are managed, ensuring transparency, consistency, and accountability in all situations.
Shenstone School also promotes an inclusive and supportive environment, which is vital in preventing radicalisation. By fostering positive relationships, encouraging respect, and ensuring that every student feels valued and heard, the school reduces feelings of isolation or marginalisation—key factors that can make individuals more vulnerable to extremist influence. The emphasis on emotional wellbeing, open communication, and mutual respect helps students develop resilience, critical thinking skills, and the confidence to challenge harmful ideas.
Most importantly, the school works collaboratively with parents, carers, and external agencies, creating a strong multi-agency safeguarding network. This partnership approach ensures that any concerns about a student’s welfare are addressed holistically, both within and beyond the school setting. Overall, Shenstone School effectively adheres to the PREVENT strategy by combining strong policies, well-trained staff, inclusive values, and collaborative safeguarding practices, ensuring a safe, supportive, and secure environment for its entire community.
